Soil fertility varies

Almost 75% of the forest land consists of till while over 15% is made up of sediment. The average productive ability (site class) is 5.3 m3 standing volume per hectare and year.

The site class decreases strongly from south to north. On average, the growth increment is 4-5 times higher in the south compared in the north. The forest’s rotation period, i.e., the number of years from planting until felling, is 60-100 years for conifers in the Götaland region and 80-130 years in Norrland. Several deciduous species, with the exception of oak and beech, have shorter rotation periods.
